Shareware Business Blunders Ebook

37 industry experts reveal the costliest
shareware business mistakes.

From the desk of Adam Stiles, developer of the NetCaptor web browser:

You are invited to check out my new ebook called "Shareware Business Blunders".

I talked to 37 shareware experts, people like:

  • Chris "Lockergnome" Pirillo
  • Steve Pavlina, founder of Dexterity Software
  • Download.com Sr. Editor Wayne Cunningham
  • Nick Bradbury, Creator of FeedDemon & HomeSite
  • Scott Swedorski, Founder of Tucows
  • Scott Miller, Founder of Apogee Systems
  • Thomas Warfield, Goodsol Development
  • And 30 more. Here's the full list ...
  • I asked them to tell me the biggest mistakes they see shareware developers make, and their worst mistakes too. This 124 page ebook is a compilation of their responses to the questions, and is full of information that is very helpful to shareware developers. Why learn the lessons of success the hard way when you can learn from someone else's mistakes?

Each contributor answered the questions, so there are 38 different answers. Each contributor focuses on the issues that are most important to them. Some focus more on their own mistakes, and some focus more on common and costly mistakes they see other developers making.

Common topics include registration incentives, user interface design, software protection, market research, affiliate programs and partnering, pricing, web site usability and design, the software buying process, business structure, customer and technical support, and many marketing topics.

One of my favorite contributions is from Nick Bradbury, the author of HomeSite, TopStyle, and FeedDemon. You don't find many people in the industry who have written more than one category-leading application, and Nick has written three. Nick sold HomeSite to Allaire, and Allaire was later purchased by Macromedia. Nick shares that his costliest mistake was the decision to sell HomeSite without really knowing what it was worth. The driving factor behind his decision to sell was desperation caused by doing one-to-one technical email support. Nick then describes changes he's implemented with his two newer applications to make sure he never gets in that desperate situation again.

All of the contributions are helpful in different ways - some are from vendors, and some are from developers, but all contain valuable insight into avoiding common mistakes and increasing business success.
